Look around you. Technology is everywhere, and chances are, that technology is illustrated, one way or another. A smiling envelope congratulating you for clearing your inbox, cartoony stickers on your Instagram story, or the emoji in your messages.
But it hasn’t always been this way. Over the last decade, illustration has graduated from niche to normal, a standard part of every major tech brand’s visual language. How and why did that happen?
My name is Mark Grambau. I’m a Boston-based illustrator, designer, and the creator of How to Draw a Startup, a new podcast miniseries about illustration’s evolving role in the tech industry. I’ve spoken with independent illustrators, art educators, and creative leaders from across the industry.
We’ll explore why technology brands utilize illustration, how illustrated brands are crafted, and where illustrators fit in creative teams. All this, told through personal stories of trial and triumph, the moments that shaped each guest’s creative journey.
How to Draw a Startup debuts on Thursday, December 20th. Subscribe in Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts.
